St John's Anglican Church (1841) and its historic precinct is one of Canberra's treasures. It is an oasis of quiet and beauty in the heart of our nation's capital.

Over those decades, people have come to St John's to worship, to experience the good news of Jesus and to be nourished by belonging to a church community.

The church's ambience, pipe organ, bells, stained glass windows and other works of art have enhanced their worship and spiritual lives.

We invite you to ‘come and see’ (the great invitation made by Jesus himself to his early followers) if our St John’s community is a fit for you!

Eucharist

stjohns@6

This is a Sunday evening service with a more relaxed feel.

Open to all, it is especially aimed at helping students and young professionals explore what being a disciple of Jesus is all about. Each sermon is followed by a question time.

We celebrate the Eucharist (or Holy Communion) monthly, and share supper together afterwards. On the third Sunday of each month, we enjoy a meal after the service.

8am Sung Eucharist

This is a traditional Anglican Holy Communion Service. We hear the story of God’s action in the world in the public reading of Scripture; pray for the world and the church, and share in Christ’s presence in the bread and wine of Holy Communion. The pipe organ accompanies us as we sing, drawing on the rich tradition of Christian hymnody. Morning tea follows the service.

1662 Book of Common Prayer

St John’s also keeps alive the tradition of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer (BCP), which has nourished the faith of Anglicans over the centuries. Apart from a break in January, these services are held according to following pattern:

  • 7am on the second and fourth Sundays of each month: Eucharist (Holy Communion) without music.

  • 11.15am on the first and third Sundays of each month. (Eucharist on the first Sunday, and Mattins/‘Morning Prayer’ on the third Sunday.)

  • 5pm on the second Sunday of each month: Choral Evensong

  • 10am each Wednesday: Eucharist (Holy Communion)

In addition to our regular services of worship, the church is usually open throughout the day for quiet reflection.

9.30am Sunday Eucharist

The Sunday 9.30am Family Service is a traditional all-age worship service where we enjoy the company of each other and form relationships across the generations.

It is our most popular Sunday morning service where we are shaped and nourished by God's grace to live as followers of Jesus.

Children and youth begin in the service, but also have their own targeted programs to help them engage with the Christian message.

The service is followed by morning tea - usually to the sound of children playing on the lawn.
