Asbestos roof tiles replaced with Welsh slate
In 1960 asbestos tiles replaced deteriorated timber shingles on the St John's roof. From July to October 2019 the asbestos tiles were replaced with Welsh slate costing nearly $400,000.
One major hailstorm could have rendered the church unusable because no repair work could be carried out on the asbestos tiles. They were also at risk of breaking down with the potential of releasing asbestos into the environment.
We give thanks for all those who financially contributed to the new roof via the tax deductible St John's Church Heritage Conservation Appeal Fund. The Fund made a contribution of $133,700 towards the cost of the new roof.
